"Why do that?"
Kazie sighed and rolled his eyes. "Don't ask me why a shaman does what he does. If I knew what he knew I'd be sittin' high somewheres playing with my juju beads and having zombies run my errands."
"Then you're saying I was bitten by the ghost of a wolf?"
"No. It was realhorribly real. But it was a projection. After you wounded it, it reverted to disembodied energy and disappeared."
Curiouser and curiouser, Cyrus thought. The next thing he asked himself was: Can I actually swallow this crap?
"So where does that leave me?" Cyrus asked in a tired voice.
"I don't know. I'm not no werewolf. How do you turn into the thing anyway?"
Cyrus thought about it. "Different ways. I get scared. I get mad. Sometimes I think about this dream I have . . ." He felt his face color and was glad the room was dark.
"That's another thing," Kazie added quickly. "A werewolf's dreams are sometimes prophetic."
"Prophetic?"
"Not all dreams. And they're usually confusing or unclear. But some will foretell events in the future."
"So I'm a man who can change into a wolf. I can only be killed by losing my head when I'm a wolf. I won't die and I won't age. Does that about cover it?"
"Mostly."
